Beautiful Heirloom ~~ Memory Lane Monday

Two years ago I was visiting my mother and dad
and it was close to my birthday.
My mother went to her bedroom and came out
with this:

There is a story behind this beautiful ring.
Call it an heirloom, a gift, a memory,

it is all these wrapped into one.

Whether it is nickel or platinum,
it abounds in love and memory.
Now it has more meaning than ever.
I've worn it twice since it was given
to me.  The second time at my mother's
funeral December 3, 2012.

It is beautiful with the detailed filigree and sparkling ruby.

To me, it is a ruby.  I see my mother
and her spirit
in this beautiful gift.

"Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price
is far above rubies."
Proverbs 31:10-31

You can find Proverbs 31 here.

This is the orginal box and envelope that
it came in when my mother recieved it from
her mother.
My great grandmother, Jenny Mae Ruby,
married Guy Lemon, in the early 1900's,
gave this ring to my grandmother.
Gwendolyn Lemon, who married Earl Conto and later became
parents to my mother, Eileen, in 1931. The ruby ring
was passed down to the oldest daughter in each family.
I'm guessing this ring was given to my great
grandmother in the 1930's.
My daughter, Jennifer will be the next recipient.

Is it a ruby or a crystal?
A gemologist or authorized antique dealer would know for sure.
We should have it appraised and insured if it is a ruby set in platinum.
This wouldn't take away or add to the sentiment.
It truly represents my mother and her qualities.
Some time ago my sister cross stitched a sampler of a virtuous woman
and inserted many of our mother's qualities
and talents throughout her life.
Mom, you are missed and your memory will live in our hearts
forever.

  1. This ring is beautiful. And I think it doesn't matter if it is a "real" ruby or not. You will never sell it so its monetary value doesn't matter. And its real value is in the place it holds in your hearts and the bond it represents between the generations that wear it.

  3. Hello Linda,
What a lovely ring made even lovelier by the story and memories behind it. Ruby or crystal, knowing you as I do, the true value lies in the sentiment and that makes it priceless!

It was great to turn on my computer this morning and see a message from you. For some reason I am not able to send emails to you anymore. Even when I leave comments on your blog, I get a "mail undeliverable" message and my messages get sent back. I checked and the last comment I left you was posted on your blog though, hopefully you will get this one.

Your Christmas morning rolls looked delicious. Lately we have been hosting brunch for my parents on Christmas Day. After a huge Christmas Eve, brunch seems the best way to go for a cozy Christmas Day. Wish I had seen your roll recipe earlier. My parents would have loved them. And thought about you on Christmas Day. I know how beloved your precious mamma was to you. And hard to spend this first Christmas without her.

Have a wonderful start to 2013. Can't really believe it's knocking on our doors. I am not quite ready to say goodbye to 2012 yet, but time marches on!

  4. What a beautiful ring, filled with symbolism and memories for you. I'm so sorry that your mum has passed...and while I was celebrating my Birthday, no less. Deepest sympathy, my friend.

Thank you so much for joining my final Memory Lane Monday. I'm looking forward to starting something new for 2013 (even though I don't know what it is yet!).

Wishing you love and light in the new year.
    Grateful for your friendship.
    xoxo
